Prince copyright violation

September 25, 2007

Just over a month ago I received an email from You Tube saying that I had “Prince Cries Copyright Foul on YouTube” infrinched Princes copyright, “This is to notify you that we have removed or disabled access to the following material as a result of a third-party notification by PRINCE claiming that this material is infringing.” When you click on the original link, it says that, “this video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by PRINCE.” This is quite obviously not the case as the video was shot of Prince leaving Boujis a nightclub in London on a public highway. I will get the wording right for the counter notice to see where this leads and which end user corporate interests are most powerful. With my initial less than successful understandings of the law though balance of probability imbalances I know it is important to persevere until the law works for you. The law must be understood as a language that protects and strenghens your business and quality of life. Rather than something you fear through lack of understanding that hinders, underminds, entraps and in the worse case scenario with the most negative Judge’s verdict break’s you and your business. If you pay tax and you are in the right and the law needs to be excercised you need to win and make the Judge deliver the verdict you want.

There was no specific value of the Prince material which was why I put it on youtube in the first place, to the annoyance of an online TV user that wanted more exclusive useage of my material. But as I pointed out to him it is important to have a thorough understanding of all mediums and as a content provider I need feedback from different audiences as to what works promo wise and what makes money. If the commercial value is low you are happy to let it fly as a part of a greater whole to create a brand, the big stories always selling themselves once exposed to the right markets. So on Thursday we meet with the lawyer, then publicise the story and see if there is any angle to it.
